homemade shape sorter

Upon the advice of a learning blog I like to read, The Wonder Years, I decided to try making my own shape sorter that limited the sorting to just one shape. Multi-sided figures are much harder to use in a shape sorter than circles. Q's mastered the circle, so now I wanted to try her on a cube. I took a box (shoebox size), traced around the bottom of the block I wanted to use, added a tiny bit of extra space so it would surely fit through the opening, and then cut it out with an exacto knife. In the bottom corner I cut a little opening big enough for the block to come out and Q's hand to reach in and grab it. Then I taped the whole thing shut and spray painted it one solid color. You could also cover it with paper, but I knew Q would rip it so I went with paint.

This work teaches properties of geometric figures, problem-solving skills, and conservation (even though she can no longer see the block, it is still there), and will help with early puzzle skills.
